So You Think You Can Code

Are you a smart varsity or college student looking to break into the software industry? FreshCode has an open summer internship from December 2009 to January 2010. Apply here.

What do I need to be?

  • Smart.
  • Fast.
  • Preferably in college or varsity.
  • in South Africa near Cape Town, Bellville or Stellenbosch.

What do I need to know?

  • How to code.
  • How to code well*, before you apply.
  • How to write well.

*That includes finding bugs. There's an obvious functionality bug on the FreshCode website. Bonus points if you can find it (XHTML validation doesn't count).

What will I learn as a summer intern?

You will learn the general ins and outs of an independent software startup with too many clients for its coders. You will do real work.

Some interesting things you will learn at FreshCode that you probably won't learn at a corporate:

  • How to make bank online.
  • How to find freelance work.
  • How to make beautiful things like RhythmMusicStore.com and RooiHub.
  • How to go about online branding.
  • How to design systems with great usability.
  • How to run a tight South African startup.

What will I earn?

You will receive a stake in any revenue-producing product you work on for the duration of your involvement, but the real value lies in the education of working in a driven startup with driven people. The business of software is an interesting field.

If it tickles your fancy, you will also get to play around on our dedicated servers. If you want fast hosting for your project and you are keen to intern, we can help you out.

"I never let my schooling interfere with my education." - Mark Twain

Why are you offering a summer internship?

We have too much work to go around. FreshCode gets tons of referrals and it hurts to turn clients away.

How do I apply?

Send a short, well-written 1-page résumé to jobs@freshcode.co.za or upload yours with the contact form (put internship in the subject line). If you have any previous web or software development experience, be sure to include links or samples.
